ABORIGINAL men being treated for drug and alcohol addiction at a St Kilda rehab facility are set to receive weekly deliveries of fresh food to help with their recovery.
The head of Galiamble Men’s Recovery Centre, Mark Hammersley, last week registered for the free food drops from SecondBite.
The Grey Street centre was one of the first to sign up after the state’s peak body for Aboriginal health struck an agreement with the food charity organisation.
Mr Hammersley said the partnership would help ease rising costs of running the government-funded 24-hour residential facility, which treats up to 20 men at a time.
“Some clients haven’t eaten for months when they come in. We also have clients that come and go. Some come back for a meal when they’re struggling.”
SecondBite chief executive Elaine Montegriffo welcomed the partnership. “We’re excited about Galiamble coming on board because their program is focused on improving health and wellbeing,” she said.
