Lost something precious? Police are looking for the owner of a commemorative gold ring, dated 1947, that was handed in with a box of lost property found at the South Melbourne Market last year.

Originally thought to be a championship ring for American major league baseball, it has been traced back to St Petersburg High School in Florida. The school has confirmed it is a graduation ring.

School records indicate the ring’s owner was William C. Yarbrough, who was president of the Drama Club, homeroom vice president and a member of the Chemistry Club.

A search of US census records found two people share the name of the ring’s owner, one whose father was an auditor in the fruit and vegetable industry.

The South Melbourne Market confirmed there were no stallholders at the market by that name.
