NavyCrowds have turned out to witness the arrival of the Royal Australian Navy’s largest ever ship to Port Phillip Bay.

The hull of the Landing Helicopter Dock (LHD) was transported from Spain to Australia by the Heavy Lift Ship, Blue Marlin. The trip took around eight weeks.

The Canberra class LHDs are bigger than Australia’s last aircraft carrier, HMAS Melbourne. When completed they will be more than 230 metres long, 27.5 metres high and weigh around 27,500 tonnes.

The LHD is expected to be introduced into service in 2014.
