Brighton beach-front abode right out of the box

A rare gem of a Brighton beach box is still on the market after its auction was cancelled and a prior offer failed to stack up.

The February 17 auction of No. 72 box at Dendy Street Beach, advertised for $150,000-plus, was cancelled after agent Nick Johnstone received an offer of $176,000.

But the vendor declined, wanting at least $190,000. “I sold one next door for $205,000, so it’s worth at least $190,000,” Johnstone said.

The highest price paid for a Brighton beach box was $260,000 for a new one built by Bayside council in 2011. Brighton Beach has 85 beach boxes.

The highest price paid for a beach box in Victoria was $585,000 at Portsea two years ago.
